The players Louis van Gaal needs to sign to make Manchester United title contenders next season

The players Louis van Gaal needs to sign to make Manchester United title contenders next season

Rob Smyth says Manchester United will need extensive investment if they are to challenge Chelsea next season - and suggests some likely targets for Louis van Gaal.

The first step was always going to be the easiest. At the start of his first season at Manchester United, Louis van Gaal outlined a simple three-year plan. "I hope we are in the top four this season — it suits a club like Man United," he said. “Then maybe the next step is to be champions and then the next step is to be the winners of the Champions League."
Part one is done, barring a shambolic finish to the season, but there is plenty to do if they are to take the title from Chelsea in 2015-16. United are not as good as they looked when they thrashedManchester City; nor as they as bad as they looked when they walked into Everton’s trap on Sunday.
Van Gaal has withstood some heavy criticism – or, more likely, ignored it – this season. Those dynamic performances against Spurs, Liverpool and City have probably bought him immunity from any significant criticism until the start of next season, which means he should be able to go about a vital summer’s work in relative peace. In an ideal world, that will involve a centre-back, a right-back, a central midfielder, a winger and a striker. They need to significantly improve both the first XI and the squad, given the increased demands of Europe.
The defence has done much better than expected this season – since that desperate fiasco at Leicester in September they have only conceded more than one goal in four league games – though part of that is down to David de Gea and the protection offered by United’s tiki-takanaccio possession game. Marcos RojoPhil Jones and Chris Smalling have all had decent seasons but none are top class, not yet, and all are exasperatingly injury prone. United don’t just need a high-class centre-half; they need one who has little history of injury problems. Aymeric Laporte is only 20, though he seems the likeliest candidate at the moment.

Nathaniel Clyne, pictured, has been told by Roy Hodgson the England right-back berth is his if he maintains form and fitness

Nathaniel Clyne, pictured, has been told by Roy Hodgson the England right-back berth is his if he maintains form …
Antonio Valencia has done well enough in his first full season as a right-back but makes too many individual mistakes to be a credible long-term option. Rafael’s impetuous nature clearly is not for Van Gaal, so it would not be a surprise to see someone like Nathaniel Clyne – who almost joined United in 2012 – move to Old Trafford this summer.
The apparently inevitable signing of Roma’s Kevin Strootman has been complicated by his injury problems, though United will surely sign someone in that area. Borussia Dortmund’s Ilkay Gundogan is the best available option. Ander Herrera, though weirdly overrated, has had a good first season, and Michael Carrick – the new darling of English football, at the age of 33 – should be fine for at least another season. Marouane Fellaini remains an extremely useful option, though whether such a player would be a regular in a putative title-winning XI is open to debate. Now that Van Gaal seems to have settled into a classical 4-3-3 formation, he might prefer another footballer in that position.
On paper, he already has the perfect man. Angel Di Maria generally played to the left of centre during his sparkling start to life at United, and at his best would give United much needed penetration with his dribbling. But there are plenty of signs that Di Maria is not going to come back from his problems this season, not at Old Trafford. So far his United career has followed an identical pattern to that of Juan Sebastian Veron; Sir Alex Ferguson – after telling the press they “youse are all f*****g idiots” and that Veron was “a great player” - gave Veron a second season, in which he did little of note before being sold at a significant loss that summer.
Then again, Robert Pires had a pretty poor first season at Arsenal, and followed that up with the FWA Footballer of the Year award in his second. Nobody really knows anything, but the judgement Van Gaal takes on Di Maria could be his most important of the summer. Depending on what happens with the Argentina international – whether he goes, or where he plays if he stays – United may want another winger, with Van Gaal apparently very keen on Memphis Depay.

There are other hard decisions to take, not least over Robin van Persie. There is compelling evidence – almost two years’ worth – that Van Persie was a one-season wonder at United, and has never really got over the retirement of Ferguson. The other advantage of selling Van Persie is that it will reduce the temptation to play Wayne Rooney in midfield.
As a No. 9, Rooney is a shadow of the player he was when he cleaned up the individual awards in 2009-10. He will be 30 in October and has a serious amount of mileage on the clock. But his finishing, once erratic, is now extremely accomplished and easily his strongest suit, while he offers significantly more desire and movement than Van Persie. The decision not to sign Falcaopermanently should be sadly straightforward. That means United need another striker to support Rooney and James Wilson. It has to be somebody who can play up front of his own, if United are to continue with 4-3-3. Danny Ings looks a decent value option, perhaps with Wilson going out on loan for a year.
With Rooney, Van Persie, Falcao, Juan Mata and others, United’s attack looks great on paper, albeit in the year 2012. In 2015 they have a sterile domination problem, with all that possession often not amounting to much. United have the highest average possession in the Premier League this season (60.7 per cent), but their average of 13.4 shots per game puts them eighth. That is an obvious dichotomy. The answer seems obvious: a higher tempo and a more decisive approach, which worked against City, Spurs and Liverpool. Yet if it was really that simple, you suspect a manager as good as Van Gaal would have spotted it.
Van Gaal’s other big task is to try to persuade De Gea to stay at United. The likeliest scenario is that he will go, to be replaced by Victor Valdes. If that is the case, United should help themselves to the pick of Real’s cast-offs. Every year Real clear out some extremely good players, like fashionistas throwing away an outfit they have only worn once because they are bored of it; and, while they usually get good money for such players, it is different if they are part of a swap deal for a player Real desperately want.

Gareth Bale

Gareth Bale
In 2009, when Cristiano Ronaldo joined Real, Ferguson missed a trick by not making Arjen Robben and/or Wesley Sneijder part of the deal. Instead they joined Bayern and Inter respectively that summer, and both went on to win the Treble. There are a few possible Real rejects who might interest United, including Sami Khedira and Gareth Bale. There has been a bit of a backlash against Bale lately. Let’s be clear about this: he would run riot in the Premier League.
Whether he’s Van Gaal’s type of player is another matter. Beyond the fact that he likes young players, who are more malleable, and Dutch players, who are familiar with his philosophy from his time with the national team, it’s very hard to predict who Van Gaal might want to sign because he has a unique way of judging players. He sees football through different eyes. This is a man who bombed out Lucio as soon as he joined Bayern Munich, for example, and was regularly losing his rag with Rivaldo’s tactical indiscipline at a time when most thought he was the best player in the world. There have been successes too; he saw things in Jari Litmanen, Thomas Mueller and David Alaba that many others did not.

It’s clear that certain players are incompatible with his philosophy, even if – let’s be honest here – none of us really have a clue what his philosophy is beyond the obvious virtue of keeping possession. There really is no point trying to predict who Van Gaal might sign, so that’s exactly what we’re going to do. With around £100m net spend, assuming De Gea goes, this might be United’s first XI next season: Valdes; Clyne, Laporte, Rojo, Shaw; Carrick; Di Maria, Herrera; Depay, Rooney, Bale. With that, the second step of Van Gaal’s three-year plan might just be possible.

The award was voted for by the Belgian midfielder's fellow professionals.

Hazard, who won last season's young player accolade, was handed the prize at the Grosvenor Hotel in London on Sunday.
"I'm very happy. One day I want to be the best and what I did this season is play very well, Chelsea played very well," he said.
"I don't know if I deserve to win but it is good for me. It is better to be voted by the players - they know everything about football.
"Personally I have played a good season, I have been there in the big games and I scored a lot of important goals, this is why I'm better this season."
Arsenal midfielder Leah Williamson, 18, won the Women's PFA Young Player of the Year award.

"It is amazing. It is a very proud moment for myself and my family - hopefully the first of many to come," said Kane about his award.
"I have got to keep working hard, but to be recognised by your fellow players is something special and it is a night I won't forget.
"I got the opportunity with the gaffer and I have really enjoyed my season so far - I have taken my chance."

PFA Merit award - Steven Gerrard and Frank Lampard

Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard
Frank Lampard and Steven Gerrard are both heading for the MLS                                                          Former England midfielders Steven Gerrard, 34, and Frank Lampard, 36, shared the PFA Merit award.
The veteran pair will leave the Premier League for Major League Soccer in the United States in the summer, having collected 220 England caps between them.
"I'm a young boy from a council estate who has worked ever so hard to get to where I am today," said Gerrard, who will bring his 17-year career at Anfield to an end this summer when he joins Los Angeles Galaxy.
"I have been lucky, I have had a fantastic career, it has been full of highs and lows but some of the highs I have achieved have blown me away and I achieved a lot of my dreams playing for Liverpool and England.
"Frank is an unbelievable player, a world-class player and I couldn't ask for anyone better to share it with."
Lampard, on-loan at Manchester City from New York City FC, added: "I have been fortunate enough to have had a long time playing in the Premier League along with Steven.
"It is a great honour to be alongside a player who himself has done so much for the game. For the two of us to get it, it is a nice send-off and a nice ending for me."

INTER RODATA — Nelle fila bianconere rientra Fernandes dalla squalifica, Geijo e Widmer lamentano qualche acciacco e saranno valutati fino all’ultimo. Non dovesse farcela lo svizzero, Piris passerebbe a destra con Pasquale, o Gabriel Silva a sinistra. In attacco invece è pronto Thereau.

Cristiano Ronaldo wants to head to Los Angeles once his Real Madrid contract expires in 2018, according to Grant Wahl ofSports Illustrated.
Wahl first reported Ronaldo's alleged interest in a switch to Major League Soccer during March. He has revealed extra information, writing, "Ronaldo has now decided the city where he wants to be: Los Angeles."
Two teams are likely to be situated in the City of Angels by the time CR7's Bernabeu contract comes to an end, detailed by Wahl:
It could be the Galaxy or LAFC, and while talks have yet to take place between Ronaldo and any MLS teams, L.A. is Ronaldo’s preferred destination. Meanwhile, I’m told it’s looking more likely every day that LAFC won’t start play until 2018. That means we could see Ronaldo debut for a new team in a new stadium that year.
Paul White/Associated Press
So-called "franchise players" have become commonplace for MLS' biggest teams, and indeed, those just entering the league structure.
New York City FC and Orlando City are currently working through their debut seasons with David Villa and Kaka taking the headlines at the respective clubs. Both players are legends of the European game and have the power to pull in a larger global audience.
Los Angeles Galaxy are used to luring high-profile players from across the globe. Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard will join the team at the end of the Premier League season, while Galaxy skipper Robbie Keane headed to the club after a distinguished career at sides including Inter Milan, Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool and Celtic.
David Beckham, one of football's most famous names, helped pave the way by joining Galaxy in 2007.

Ronaldo's potential arrival in the U.S. would likely outrank the rest. He's won every trophy worth winning in Europe and is rightfully considered one of the sport's best ever. Representing Manchester United and Real Madrid gains great traction abroad, meaning he could be the perfect face of LAFC, when the franchise finally launches.
He remains one of football's most marketable stars and, with 39 goals in La Liga this season, is still at the top of his game. Like Thierry Henry, who joined New York Red Bulls when his ageing legs began to show, a move to America could keep the Portuguese player scoring goals for a prolonged period of time.
No club, no matter how big, would turn down the chance to sign Ronaldo. The 30-year-old will likely receive a plethora of offers when he next becomes available, so any suitors will need to work extremely hard to convince him of their project.

Arsenal need to strengthen their squad with four "top-quality" players to stand any chance of winning the Premier League, according to Sky Sports’ Thierry Henry.
The Gunners were held to a goalless draw at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday as Chelsea closed in on a fourth Premier League crown.
Henry believes Arsenal must now replicate the transfer policy employed by Chelsea last summer if they are to have any chance of ending their 10-year wait for the title.

Hull v Arsenal

Arsene Wenger was happy with Arsenal's performance apart from their decisions in the Chelsea penalty area.

“Arsenal need to buy four players, they need that spine,” the Frenchman toldSuper Sunday.
“They need a goalkeeper, they still need a centre-back, they still need a holding midfielder and, I’m afraid, they need a top, top-quality striker in order to win this league again.
“The best example for me today was Chelsea. They struggled last year and they were still competing to win the league. They now have [Thibaut] Courtois, [Nemanja] Matic, Cesc [Fabregas] and Diego Costa.
“For me that speaks volumes, and we saw it today. A team didn’t and a team did, and Chelsea are about to win the league.”

Thierry Henry

Asked whether he thought Wenger would actually go out and address the areas of Arsenal’s squad he feels need improving, Henry added: “He has to do it.
“If you take the goalkeepers, for example, at Bayern Munch, Chelsea, Manchester United and a lot of other teams.
“You need that type of player, you need that competitiveness within the group and you need great players. In order to win the league that has to happen.”
While highlighting areas which he feels need bolstering at the Emirates, Henry went on to claim it was time a number of the club’s top players started to perform on a more consistent basis.

Jose Mourinho says Chelsea are far from boring and hinted that Arsenal fans may be bored by a lack of Premier League titles.
“Players need to perform also,” Henry said. “I will single out Mesut Ozil, who made his eighth appearance against a top-four team today.
“Zero goals, two assists. That is not enough. Since joining Arsenal he has 14 assists. Now if you look at Fabregas at Chelsea, he has 16 assists in one season.
“At one point, I do think, and I do believe, the players have to step up and stand their game up.”

Wenger: Sign Fabregas? No, Arsenal have Alexis & Ozil

Wenger: Sign Fabregas? No, Arsenal have Alexis & Ozil

The former Gunners captain joined Chelsea last summer but the Frenchman insists he was not tempted to make a bid with the World Cup-winner and Chilean already at the club.

Arsene Wenger has insisted there was "no logic" in Arsenal re-signing Cesc Fabregas with Alexis Sanchezand Mesut Ozil already at the club.

The former Gunners captain joined Chelsea last summer from Barcelona for a fee of around €36 million, with Alexis moving to the Emirates Stadium the following month.

The Chile international has impressed in his debut season, contributing 21 goals and nine assists, while Ozil - a club-record arrival a year earlier - is flourishing of late after a period marred by injury problems and inconsistent displays.

When asked about why he declined to sign Fabregas for Arsenal, Wenger said: "There would be congestion. We don't only have Sanchez and Ozil but also Jack Wilshere in this position, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain, Aaron Ramsey.

"When you spend £40m (€55m) on a position you already have players in, you have to question the logic. When a big player goes from your club, everyone says you have to buy another one with the same qualities.

"But once you have brought another one with the same qualities and then he wants to come back, it is not obvious to spend so much money on a position that is exactly the same.

"Where does Cesc play on Sunday? Behind the striker. Where does Ozil play? Behind the striker."

Both Alexis and Ozil have improved of late, with the former overcoming a slight mid-season dip in form, having combined twice in the recent FA Cup semi-final win and Wenger is delighted to be reaping rewards.

He added: "What you want when you invest so much money is to get paid back. When I bought Sanchez I thought he can play on the right, on the left, through the middle. That was an important quality.

"Secondly, I wanted someone who has a fighting spirit in the Premier League, to adapt, and to give something to the team on that front. That was needed - someone to say, 'Come on, I'm ready for a fight'.

"Thirdly, a guy who has a good combination of running in behind and who can dribble as well. On all of that, I was not disappointed. I was extremely happy.

"People questioned Ozil. Many people speak now about Sanchez but in the first part of the season Ozil wasn't there.

"In the second part of the season, Ozil has blossomed and is getting to where you want him to be: a player that is the centre of our game and who makes other people play. He is naturally generous."
